Sulphuric acid functions as both a strong acid and a powerful dehydrating agent, making it valuable in chemical synthesis, laboratory analysis, metal processing, and industrial manufacturing. Its versatility has made it one of the highest-volume chemicals produced globally.
Because concentrated sulphuric acid is highly corrosive, it presents significant hazards if handled improperly. Contact with skin or eyes can cause severe chemical burns, and inhaling acid mist may irritate or damage the respiratory system. For these reasons, it should only be handled by trained personnel using appropriate protective equipment, including chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, face shields where appropriate, and protective clothing.
One of the most important safety principles when working with sulphuric acid is proper dilution. When dilution is necessary, acid should always be added slowly to water. Adding water directly to concentrated acid can generate intense heat and cause dangerous splashing.
Proper storage is equally important. Concentrated sulphuric acid should be stored in compatible, tightly sealed containers in cool, dry, and well-ventilated areas, away from incompatible substances such as strong bases, reactive metals, and organic materials. Users should always consult the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before handling or using the chemical.
